Education and experience requirements
We strongly recommend that you have at least two years of experience in evaluation and management coding. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pathophysiology is required to successfully complete this course. AAPC offers the following prerequisites:
Fundamentals of Medicine — covers all three of the prerequisites below.
Anatomy (self-paced instruction), Medical Terminology (self-paced instruction), and Pathophysiology (self-paced instruction).

Self-paced: Average time to completion is two months or less. Four-month access to course materials with options for extensions.

The CEMC Online Training Course will ensure you thoroughly understand the latest code changes, regulatory updates, and industry best practices. You’ll also learn how to navigate complex E/M coding scenarios so you’re prepared to accurately assign codes in challenging situations.

Understanding of E/M guidelines for new and established office and outpatient services, as well as other E/M services such as consultations and hospital services
Ability to determine E/M level of service based on MDM and time
Knowledge of rules and regulations for Medicare billing — including incident to, teaching situations, shared visits, consultations, and global surgery
Coding per National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI), ICD-10-CM, CPT, and modifier rules
Risk assessment, including (but not limited to) the ability to benchmark and identity problematic situations and missed billing opportunities
