Small Practices May Be Exempt From CMS MIPS Program

HHS Announces Fraud Recovery Statistics
The American Health Lawyers association reported the following in its weekly Fraud and Abuse update:

The government won or negotiated more than $2.5 billion in healthcare fraud judgments and settlements in fiscal year (FY) 2016, the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Justice (DOJ) said in their Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control Program Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2016 released January 19.

Survey: 1 in 5 Would Switch to Docs Providing Telehealth
If you're 35 to 44 years old and have children under 18 years old, you're more likely to switch primary care providers (PCP) if he or she provides telehealth visits. If so, you're part of 20 percent of the population who'd do so, recent Harris Poll studies indicate.

The studies, commissioned by American Well, a telehealth company, indicates 65 percent of those surveyed are interested in seeing their PCP over video.

Locum Tenens Basics
Locum tenens is a Latin phrase that means, “to hold the place of.” In medicine, locum tenens are contracted physicians who substitute for a physician who has left the practice, or who is absent or otherwise unavailable. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) allows payment to the regular physician for services provided during his or her absence, and that are billed under his or her name and National Provider Identifier (NPI) number with modifier Q6 Services furnished by a locum tenens physician.
