When I do a shave removal of a malignant lesion, I take a margin and I go down to the subcutaneous layer. I am NOT doing an elliptical excision that requires sutures.
I am shaving it but I am going to the same depth as I would if I did an elliptical excision with sutures.
So a shave removal is the same thing as an excision - I am simply shaving with a razor instead of cutting an elliptical shape with a scalpel.
So how do I bill a shave removal (shave excision) of a malignant lesion that I go to the subcu but I do not put any sutures?
also:
But isn’t there a different code for shave removal of a benign lesion versus a malignant lesion?
