I was looking at the substance use, abuse, and dependence codes and saw that there was a subset for both use and abuse with withdrawal. Now I'm confused because if they're experiencing withdrawal, doesn't that mean they're dependent? My understanding was that use was used when using the substance had caused a physical or emotional problem, but there was no pattern of such behavior. Abuse meant they were continuing to use a substance despite it causing them problems, but they had not reached the point of physical dependence. Once there was physical dependence... it should be coded as dependence. Doesn't experiencing withdrawal by definition mean they're dependent? I do see a tip in my coding book saying that patients who use or abuse a substance may experience withdrawal without having a diagnosis of dependence. Is my definition of dependence incorrect? I'm giving a presentation to my providers that will include the difference between use, abuse, and dependence, and want to make sure I'm giving them correct information.
