I have been researching, because we are loosing our Audiologist in a few months and I am wondering about billing audiograms under our Hearing Instrument Specialist. I called my Medicare contractor and Asked the question and they said yes, that would be appropriate, but were unable to give anything in writing. What I have found in Writing in NO we cannot bill them even under direct supervision since it does not have TC and PC component. (92557) However it is considered a diagnostic test , we own the equipment and the HIS is employed by the physician. It would be direct supervision, and the physician would provide the interpretation of the the test.

What you have found in writing is correct. Billing for specific audiometric tests like CPT 92557 requires that the service be provided by a qualified audiologist, since there is no professional component associated with this code. Audiologists must bill directly for diagnostic services, and unfortunately HIS cannot independently bill Medicare for these tests
